This guide tells you how to export route files from MyRoute-app to your TomTom navigation device. A distinction is made between manual export and wireless export. You can also read more about exporting POIs from MyRoute-app. 


We would like to give you the following tips in advance:

  • Always create routes that you are going to use on your TomTom navigation system on the TomTom map in the MRA Routeplanner;
  • Always use the correct (original) cables for exporting to your navigation system;
  • Always use the file with 'track' in the name when navigating on your TomTom. This is the so-called route-track and it is always the most accurate when navigating.
    Do you want your TomTom Rider to not only import the track? Then export the ITN file type from MyRoute-app;

Manual export

Below is explained how you can export to TomTom navigation devices with a USB cable. This includes for example the TomTom Rider, 40/400, 41/410, 42/420 and 450 but also the TomTom Rider 3. 


The steps for exporting 

  1. Open the route you want to export;
  2. Connect your TomTom with the USB cable;
  3. On your TomTom, you will see a screen asking 'Do you want to connect to the computer' or the option 'connect to computer' or 'enable import mode'. Click this to establish the connection.

    A screen will then appear on your TomTom device that indicates that the navigation device is connected to your computer (you can check this in File Explorer, see also What to do if the navigation system is not found).

  4. Click on the 'export' button in the route editor of MyRoute-app.
    You now get the option to install the connector if you have not already done so (see also the Manual 'Installing connector' - Windows & MacOS). Then click on 'Open route'.

  5. The connector will open and you must select your navigation system.

    • Newer models (such as TomTom Rider, 40/400, 41/410, 42/420 and 450) can import a GPX file, so we recommend this.

    • Note: For older TomTom Riders you must always choose the option for the .ITN file type. You must then take into account the maximum number of route points that your navigation system can handle.

  6. Next, click on 'export to device'.  

  7. You will receive a message that the export was successful. You can now disconnect the navigation system from your computer and use the route on your navigation system.

  8. You still need to indicate on your TomTom which routes you want to import. Once you have done this, go to 'my routes' and you will see the new route. When you click on the route, you can choose between a route and a track. We advise you to choose 'track' as it is more accurate than the route.



Exporting wirelessly with TomTom MyDrive

Exporting via TomTom MyDrive is possible for the MRA Routeplanner Gold user to the newer TomTom navigation systems. This is handy because you no longer need to use a wired connection! Always check in advance whether this is supported for your TomTom device.


The steps for exporting

Take the following steps beforehand:

  1. Make sure you have created a TomTom MyDrive account;
  2. Make an internet connection for your TomTom Rider via your smartphone (see the TomTom manual if necessary);

Export routes from MyRoute app via MyDrive as follows:

  1. Open the route you want to export;
  2. Click on 'Save as' in the top right corner and then on 'TomTom MyDrive' in the drop-down menu;
  3. You then need to log in to TomTom MyDrive. This is to connect to the TomTom driver.
  4. Make sure your settings on your TomTom are also set correctly. You can see this by the cloud in the top corner of your TomTom device. 
  5. Choose the file type you want to export. You can choose between GPX (route, track) and OV2 (POI). Choose GPX to export the route. 
  6. The route is now synchronized and can be found in the route list of your navigation device (My Routes). Preferably use the file with 'track' in front of it.


Exporting POI's 

Make sure that in the route editor of MyRoute-app you have also saved the POIs you want to export as POIs in a route (see the step 'adding' in Manual POI's).

  • Open the MyRoute app route with the POIs you want to export; 
  • Follow all the steps as described above but choose the .OV2 (POI) file in step 4;

  • Then start the TomTom, click on 'Menu' and then on 'My Places' and click on the POI file;
  • Click on the POIs one by one, click on the 3 dots, click 'Add place';
  • You can now change the name if you want and then click 'Add' in the bottom right corner.
  • The POI is now added with its name and icon to the map of your TomTom.


Lastly

  • You can also perform the above steps from the MyRoute-app Mobile application. Here you will find the option 'save as' after clicking on 'page menu' in the right-hand corner.
  • Unfortunately, it is not possible to export .ITN files via TomTom MyDrive as this is no longer supported by TomTom. 



The option 'Save as'

As also described in the manual General information about 'export' and 'save as' it is always possible to save a route file and then copy it to your TomTom device. 


Save POI files for TomTom

Make sure that in the route editor of MyRoute-app you have saved the POIs you want to save as POIs in a route (see the step 'adding' in Manual POI's).

  1. Open the MyRoute-app route with the POIs you want to export;
  2. Click on 'save as' and then choose the .OV2 file type (this is the POI file type that TomTom can read);
  3. You can then transfer the downloaded file to your navigation device using Explorer/Finder.
